As someone who has been working in the nonprofit space for some time now, I’ve dedicated most of my professional life to providing services, goods, and resources to meet community needs. Through the years, I have learned that what distinguishes a good supporter from a great one is being a good listener. Listening to the people who are at the center of homelessness must be the guiding light of our shared purpose.

Empathetic listening is at the heart of our work at Hamilton Families. For years, we have listened to and identified the real needs in our community by listening to families in our programs. Their lived experiences inform how we can all best serve those struggling with housing insecurity.

I’d like to introduce you to two of those voices: Cindia Martinez and Maria Arribas

It’s voices like Cindia’s, Maria’s, and others who are shaping our shared purpose and guiding our mission, ensuring that we meet the most urgent needs of our unhoused friends, families, and neighbors. And at a time when nearly 40,000 people are experiencing homelessness in the San Francisco Bay Area, we’re deeply proud to be able to help families in our community to stabilize and thrive.

Our community has proven that nothing is more certain than the fact that progress happens when people use their collective power. Thanks for being a part of this.

In community,

Rachel Kenemore

Finding Home documentaries screened at YBCA

To cap off Homelessness Awareness Month, Hamilton Families and its media making partner BAVC Media with support from Google.org, were hosted by the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts for a documentary screening event of our film series: FINDING HOME.

The films challenge the meaning of home, and how shelter or lack thereof does not define us as humans. Through various techniques, like first-hand narration, animation, or observational filmmaking, the films show how the bond of family is the real foundation of home and the walls of love serve as its shelter. Despite dire circumstances, families will survive, thrive, and be the heroes of their own story.

Give the gift of a donation this holiday season

The holidays can be an especially troubling time for families experiencing homelessness and it’s up to all of us to help support them! If you, and every other Hamilton Hero, donates the same amount that you did last year to Hamilton Families, our team will be able to permanently house 200 families!

Give the gift of a donation today by checking the “In honor, memory, or support of someone” check box when you donate! With your generosity, we can ensure every family we serve is housed for the holidays!

This year, Hamilton Families is working to permanently house 200 families experiencing #homelessness. Join me and be a #HamiltonHero by donating to @HamFamSF to help hundreds of unhoused families in the #SFBayArea. Give meaningfully at hamiltonfamilies.org/hamilton-heroes!
